Day 9
We had pushed ahead on Day 8 by about two miles to shorten the Day 9 distance to Segeduum, the Roman fort at the walk’s end. The trail took us through the center of Newcastle with many bikers, lots of walkers and some roads with traffic.

The walk followed the River Tyne, a 73-mile stream with sources on the Scottish border up north and in the Pennine Mountains, which form the spine of England. The Tyne River Trust calls it one of the cleanest in England and the best for salmon. The best thing for us? Walking along it meant a flat walk.

After 9.73 miles, we reached Segeduum, the starting point for walkers going west, and for us . . . the finishing point for walking Hadrian’s Wall.

But there was more to come.
